A Proclamation

Celebrating and Uplifting Armenia National Day

Saturday, September Twenty-First, Two Thousand & Twenty-Four

WHEREAS, On September 21, 1991, Armenia declared its independence from the Soviet Union, marking a historic moment that re-established itself as a sovereign nation after centuries of foreign domination; and

WHEREAS, Armenia is one of the world's oldest civilizations, with a rich cultural heritage and a history dating back to ancient times, including the establishment of the first Christian state in 301 AD; and

WHEREAS, The Republic of Armenia has demonstrated a commitment to democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law and has been recognized by other democratic nations, including the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, Armenians in Pittsburgh and around the world have made significant contributions to the cultural, economic, and social fabric of their communities while preserving their unique heritage traditions; and

WHEREAS, The Armenian people have shown resilience and strength in the face of adversity, including the Armenian Genocide of 1915, and have continued to thrive and contribute to the global community; and

WHEREAS, Over the last 32 years, the Republic of Armenia has consolidated its sovereignty and independence, fostering strong ties with the United States of America and other nations and becoming a vital player in regional and international affairs; and

WHEREAS, The Armenian community in Pittsburgh will joyously celebrate the 33rd anniversary of Armenia’s independence on September 21, honoring their ancestors' legacy and the Armenian people's enduring spirit.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Ed Gainey, Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, do hereby proclaim September 21, 2024, as "Armenia National Day" in the City of Pittsburgh and encourage all citizens to recognize the rich history, cultural heritage, and contributions of the Armenian community.

Given under my hand and the Great Seal of the City of Pittsburgh at the City County Building in the First Ward of the City of Pittsburgh 414 Grant Street, Pittsburgh, PA. 15219 on this Twenty First day of September in the year Two Thousand & Twenty-Four
