Rome Provincial Council

June 16, 2000

Order discussed and approved in the meeting of the Provincial Council, June 16, 2000

The Rome Provincial Council,

JOINS the initiative of the Association of Italian-Armenian Friendship, Zatik, in asking the Italian government to recongize by official act the genocide of the Armenian people, perpetrated by the Turkish state and never offically recognized by them;

CONSIDERS that genocide is the most ferocious and inhumane of all crimes, in that it seeks to eliminate an entire people, their culture, and their history;

HAS OBSERVED that the extermination of the Armenian people and state has been recognized as a genocide by a subcommission of the United Nations Human Rights Committee in 1985, by the European Parliament, by parliamentary resolutions in numerous states, and by the Ottoman Empire's own Court Martial at the end of 1919;

AFFIRMS that Turkey, in order to join the European Union, will have to recognize their responsibility for this genocide, and that recognition of the crime committeed is also in the interest of the Turkish people, so they will be able to liberate themselves from an insupportable moral weight;

RECOGNIZES the necessity that world public opinion intervenes in favor of the Armenian people as it has towards the Jewish Holocaust;

REQUESTS that the Italian Parliament recognize the Armenian Genocide on the basis of resolutions already created by the UN, the European Parliament, the United States Congress, and the many nations of the world;

EXPRESSES solidarity with the Armenian people in their fight for the recognition of their true history and for the defense of their inviolable rights.

Provincia di Roma

Ordine del giorno discusso ed approvato nella seduta del Consiglio Provinciale del 16 giugno 2000

Il Consiglio Provinciale di Roma

ADERISCE all'iniziativa dell'Associazione di Amicizia Italoarmena Zatik volta a chiedere al Governo Italiano di riconoscere, attraverso un atto ufficiale, il genocidio del popolo armeno perpetrato dallo stato Turco nel 1915 e mai ufficialmente dallo stesso riconosciuto;

CONSIDERATO che il genocidio è il più feroce e disumano fra i crimini in quanto tende all'eliminazione di tutto un popolo, della sua cultura e della sua storia;

PRESSO ATTO che lo sterminio del popolo armeno è stato riconosciuto come un genocidio alla sottocommissione dei Diritti dell'Uomo dell'ONU nel 1985, dal Parlamento Europeo, dalle risoluzioni dei Parlamenti di numerosi Paesi e dalla stessa Corte Marziale ottomana fin dal 1919;

AFFERMATO che la Turchia al fine di poter far parte dell'Unione Europea, dovrà riconoscere la responsibilità per tale genocidio, e che il riconoscimento del crimine commesso è anche nell'interesse del popolo turco, che potrà così liberarsi da un insopportabile peso morale;

RICONOSCE la necessità che l'opinione pubblica mondiale intervenga a favore del popolo Armeno cosi come ha fatto verso l'Olocausto ebraico;

CHIEDE che il Parlamento Italiano riconosca il genocidio degli Armeni sulla base delle risoluzioni già assunte dall'ONU, dal Parlamento Europeo, dal Congresso degli Stati Uniti d'America e da numerose nazioni da tutto il mondo;

ESPRIME peina solidarietà al popolo Armeno nella sua lotta per il riconoscimento della verità storica e per la difesa dei suoi diritti inviolabili.
