COMMEMORATING THE 75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

WHEREAS, The extermination of more than one and one-half million Armenians by the Ottoman Turks and the forced deportation of countless others of this unfortunate people is remembered every year on April 24th since 1915 as Armenian Martyrs Day; and

WHEREAS, In the 75 years since the massacre Armenians throughout the world have mourned their slaughtered relatives and the loss of their ancestral homeland in which were nourished the beginnings of civilization, the relics of antiquity; and

WHEREAS, The deportation of those Armenians spared the martyrdom of the Ottoman attempt at genocide left these people planted in the newly fabricated Armenian Socialist Republic still prey to this historical enemies on all sides, a condition which in recent months has burgeoned into full scale conflict with the neighboring Turkish Azerbajanians; and

WHEREAS, It is next to impossible for us Americans, living in freedom and steeped in the doctrine of the unalienable rights of all men, to comprehend the monstrous evils that befall the victims of tyranny, but it behooves us to do all in our power to stem the tide of bigotry and oppression on all fronts; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby commemorates this 75th Anniversary of the Armenian Massacre on this day, April 24, 1990; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and she hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Armenian Martyr's Memorial Committee.
